Roll of honour: An in-depth look at New Zealand Wine Medal Winners

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 03, 2011 - every wine that New Zealand House of Wine offers is already well-celebrated, coming as they do from the most renowned New Zealand wineries such as Esk Valley and Palliser Estate and covering some of the most popular varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rose, it is also true that certain wines come to win particular recognition from within the industry. If you fancy something a little special, cast your eye over some of the most generously awarded New Zealand wines that The New Zealand House of Wine currently stocks…

The Craggy Range Avery Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2010 won a gold medal at the Sommelier Wine Awards 2011 in the UK. The grapes from which this classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is produced were grown in Craggy Range's Avery Vineyard, in the stony soils of the old Omaka River bed in the Wairau Valley. This pale, green-tinged wine has the aroma of grapefruit, bay leaf, nectarine and fresh herbs, and combines cool, natural acidity and a fine, waxy texture with various herb and citrus flavours. It is a good match with mussels, salads and fresh fish and has a list price of £14.99, however is currently on Special offer at £10.99 each with purchases of two or more bottles.

Esk Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2010 is a powerful and intense wine from the Marlborough region. It won a gold medal at The International Wine Show 2010 in New Zealand, in addition to silver medals at the New Zealand Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2011 and Spiegelau International Wine Competition 2011. It is a full-bodied, dry wine that boasts the flavours of ripe tropical fruits and citrus, in addition to fresh herbs, pea-pod and tomato leaf. It is available for just £8.99 a bottle, or currently on Special Offer at £7.59 if two bottles or more are purchased.

As one of the most prolific of New Zealand grape varieties, it’s no surprise that there are so many Sauvignon Blanc award winners. In addition to the award winners from Craggy Range and Esk Valley, Morton Estate White Label Sauvignon Blanc 2010 picked up a gold medal at The International Wine Show 2010 in New Zealand, in addition to a silver medal a bit closer to home, at the International Wine Challenge 2011. It can be bought for £9.99 a bottle, and is currently on Special Offer at £7.99 when two or more bottles are purchased. This wine is very much a traditional Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, with such flavours as passion fruit and citrus being particularly prominent.

Winning a gold medal at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards in 2010 meanwhile, was the Palliser Estate Pinot Noir 2008, which features cherry and spice flavours coupled with red and black berry fruit aromas. A gracefully maturing wine from the Martinborough region, it is available for £18.35 a bottle, or currently on Special Offer at £14.99 if more than one bottle is purchased.

Finally, another medal winner amongst the wide range at New Zealand House of Wine is the Cloudy Bay Pelorus NV, which is a sparkling wine from the Marlborough region and has a list price of £16.79. Its Chardonnay origins are indicated by its aromas of ripe citrus fruits, as well as its pale straw colour. It won a silver medal at the Liquorland Top 100 2009 event in New Zealand, and is also presently available on Special Offer at £15.99 each for those customers who purchase more than one bottle.
