From August 12 to 23, Universiade – also known as the World University Games – will take place in the southern Chinese border city of Shenzhen. Students from 45 different countries will compete in sports spanning both traditional Olympiad games and modern events, such as BMX, beach volleyball, and aerobics.
Held every two years, Universiade brings together some of the world's most promising young athletes. Preceded by a torch relay and bookended by action-packed opening and closing ceremonies, the games will take place in some of Shenzhen's newest sports venues.
Twenty-one new stadiums and sports centers were built in preparation for the games, and Universiade attendees will be amongst the first to experience some of them. The biggest new venue is the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, dubbed the 'Spring Cocoon' for its lattice iron shell and distinct shape. Set to host the opening ceremony and table tennis event, the structure cost US$304M to build, and houses a gymnasium, a stadium, a swimming pool, shops, and a variety of public spaces.
