PRLog (Press Release) – Aug 01, 2011 – Bottom of heel pain is one of the most common complaints dealt with by podiatrists, and accounts for a high proportion of foot complaints dealt with by doctor’s throughout the US and UK.  The high incidence of heel complaints is perhaps not unsurprising, given that the heel has to take the brunt of the forces when walking, and has to cope with the full weight of the body. When walking and running, that force is multiplied by several degrees, with the heel bone and heel fat pad placed under great strain.

Modern footwear can often be to blame, with fashionable styles rarely offering the necessary support, and there being a general misunderstanding on how frequently running and athletic shoes need to be replaced. EVA foam rubber used as cushioning in modern trainers often degrades far more quickly than the tough leather and suede uppers of shoes, giving the impression that shoes still have plenty of use. Arch support is often grossly inadequate, placing the plantar fascia under great strain.

Damage to the plantar fascia can occur easily, resulting in small tears forming and the development of plantar fasciitis. This condition has been reported to account for 15% of all foot problems diagnosed by doctors, and will affect up to 10% of the population of the United States at some point during a lifetime. The condition typically affects the heel, where the fascia attaches to the heel bone.

Considering the high prevalence of the condition, it is clear that it does not just affect the highly active. Plantar fasciitis commonly affects individuals from middle age upwards more frequently, as the body’s ability to cope with shock waves diminishes. The condition affects those who are overweight or obese, as the feet have to cope with levels of strain for which they are ill designed. Even the highly inactive suffer, as when the feet get out of condition, even quite innocuous activities can trigger damage, and pain.

The high prevalence of plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis and other heel problems which affect the Western world demonstrates a lack of understanding, as in the majority of cases all of these conditions can be easily prevented. It is with this in mind that a new website has been launched, to help improve understanding of heel problems to prevent suffering from these conditions.
